The window of opportunity to harness the Demographic Dividend is temporarily open for Botswana.
Botswana is characterized by a youthful age structure:
a. 53% of the population is aged below 25 years and 20% is aged between 15-24 years.
b. The proportion of children (0-14 years) to the general population has declined from 47.5% in 1971 to 32.6% in 2011, while the 15-64 years
increased from 46.9% (1971) to 64.9% (2011).
c. The dependency ratio declined from 113 in 1971 to 93 in 1991 and stood at 60.2 in 2011.
d. Total Fertility Rate has declined significantly from 6.6 children per woman in 1981 to 2.7 children per woman in 2011.
