The United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) has donated a Nissan double cab to the Department of Youth in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture.
Accepting the vehicle, the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Mr Shaw Kgathi said the donation was another milestone achievement in youth development through a joint partnership between the government and the UNFPA. Mr Kgathi said that the vehicle will enable the department to reach out and deliver services and its various programmes to the youth who need them. Minister Kgathi appreciated the technical and financial contribution from UNFPA especially in the area of health as they relate to the young people.
He noted that government had yielded positive and sustainable benefits in reaching out and improving the quality of life of Batswana.
For her part, the UNFPA officer in charge, Ms Sarah Masale said young people are at the heart of UNFPA programmes as well as being the heart beat of Botswana's development agenda.
Ms Masale said that young people the world over live in poverty adding that they lack access to technology and information and many face social inequality, poor education, gender discrimination and inadequate health as well as unemployment.
She however said that it was pleasing that Botswana has made progress over the years in many of these areas although many young people in Botswana continue to experience challenges relating to HIV/AIDS, gender based violence and poverty. BOPA
